This means that the exit flow from the nozzle will be subsonic and that we will have to reduce the pressure further to obtain a better working condition for the given nozzle. As seen in case E, reducing the exit pressure further results in a strange behavior in the gas flow.

During this operation condition, the exit pressure of the nozzle is below the ambient pressure. This makes exit flow converge and causes a strange shock wave formation after exiting the nozzle. These shock waves are not normal in this case and are more complex than any that we have encountered so far. However, the flow beyond the exit nozzle becomes a mixture of supersonic and subsonic flow, called overextended flow.

During this operation, the nozzle is inefficient, but usually the rocket engines are designed in this mode. This interesting flow pattern can be seen in the following figure. First figure show this pattern extending backward. The second figure shows a test case of this flow pattern in the sea elevation, meaning during liftoff. Why we use inefficient nozzle design during the lift-off. The answer to this question is simple. The answer will be clear to you when we study the next case.

For case F, the exit pressure is reduced even further and the rocket nozzle works in its optimum efficiency. There is no shock wave formation in the flow and the gas flow gets out from the nozzle almost at the same diameter as the diameter of the exit nozzle. The reason we used an inefficient flow for case E rather than case F, which is optimal, becomes clearer now.

Since the rocket is ascending after the lift-off, the outside pressure begins to fall from case E pressure towards case F pressure. This takes the rocket nozzle towards its optimum design condition, as shown here. For case G, what happens if we further reduce the exit pressure of the nozzle? Since the gas coming from the exit nozzle is at a higher pressure than the surrounding gas, the gas coming from the nozzle will expand outward as soon as it leaves the nozzle.

This flow behavior is also inefficient, since some thrust force goes outward from the rocket instead of going in the opposite direction of the rocket flight. This situation happens when the rocket is working in its optimum efficiency keeps ascending to the thinner part of the atmosphere. This flow pattern is called under expanded flow and can be seen in the Apollo Six test flights, in this image.

I hope this explanation helps you to better understand the inner workings of the converging diverging rocket nozzle.

Thank you for taking the time to watch our video. Now in our day to day lives, it is a common phenomenon that decreasing the cross-section of the nozzle increases the speed of the fluid going through it. A common experience when watering garden plants, where we decrease the cross-section of pipe at exit using our thumb, in order to increase the exit velocity of water and make it move through larger distance. Question is: To what limit, can we increase the fluid velocity by decreasing the area?

The figure you see above, whereby fluid velocity is increased by decreasing the area known as convergent nozzles is valid only for subsonic fluids. Meaning if the fluid final velocity is less than the speed of sound in that medium, the converging nozzle will accelerate it — till it reaches the speed of sound or Mach number 1. Beyond that, if it is further converged, the fluid velocity will start decreasing because of a phenomenon called Choking.

Now space is too narrow for the motion to happen and choking occurs whereby each molecule is staring each other! So, after choking occurs, the fluid has approached Mach 1. Beyond that to further increase the speed, the nozzle needs to diverge.

Then diverge to increase the speed further. In this way, there will appear a section at which the cross-section is smallest — that is called throat, the point where choking occurs. Note: Mach Number is a dimensionless number representing the ratio of flow velocity to the local speed of sound in that medium. On this slide we derive the equations which explain and describe why a supersonic flow accelerates in the divergent section of the nozzle while a subsonic flow decelerates in a divergent duct.

We begin with the conservation of mass equation :. If we differentiate this equation, we obtain:. This is Equation 10 on the page which contains the derivation of the isentropic flow relations We can use algebra on this equation to obtain:.

This equation tells us how the velocity V changes when the area A changes, and the results depend on the Mach number M of the flow. If the flow is subsonic then M 0. This is exactly the opposite of what happens subsonically.

Why the big difference? Because in supersonic compressible flows, both the density and the velocity are changing as we change the area in order to conserve mass. For subsonic incompressible flows, the density remains fairly constant, so the increase in area produces a decrease in velocity to conserve mass.

But in supersonic flows, there are two changes; the velocity and the density.

Flexible payouts — often, you can integrate your defined benefit plan with CPP and OAS, enabling you to optimize your tax efficiency. So more money stays in your pocket. Survivor benefits — depending on your DB pension's specifics, it may include survivor benefits for your beneficiary. If your plan does include this and you die before your spouse, your spouse or common-law partner may be entitled to a portion of your defined benefit plan.

Cost of living adjustments — an added benefit of some defined benefit plans is the cost of living adjustment COLA. Inflation will impact the amount you receive in retirement.

Income splitting — After the age of 55, you can split your pensionable income with your spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting can provide a considerable tax advantage depending on the tax situation of both partners. The employer bears the risk — with a defined benefit plan, the employer carries the risk that the return on investments will cover the cost of the pension amount owed to retirees.

Disadvantages of defined benefit pensions Although defined benefit retirement plans are known as gold-plated and provide guaranteed income for life, they do come with some disadvantages for the employee. Working longer than you need to — often, employees with a defined benefit plan work longer than they may need to because they become fixated on earning their "full pension" amount.

Company managed fund — although the company bears the risk of market volatility, there is still a risk to the employee. The employer needs to manage the fund appropriately, or there may not be money to pay out as pension payments. If the employer mismanages the fund or goes bankrupt, there is a chance the plan members' future pension income could be affected. Sears anyone?

Not always indexed to inflation — not all defined benefit plans are indexed to inflation. Ones that aren't are worth less money every year that passes. If you have a DB pension not indexed to inflation, you will want a secondary retirement income. An employee has no individual pension account — DB pension contributions are pooled into one investment fund.

Plan members can often get projections of their future pension and current commuted value. But employees are not entitled to any of that money until they leave the plan or retire. What is a defined contribution pension plan? Benefits of a defined contribution pension Vested immediately — many DC pension plans vest immediately or within a short time. Once your contributions are vested, that money entirely belongs to you.

So if you were to leave the program or change employers, you would have options on what to do with your plan's investments.

Ability to withdraw or transfer funds — depending on the plan rules, you may be able to remove or transfer funds before full retirement age. This is a valuable benefit if you change employers throughout your career. Choice of investment options — with a defined contribution plan, you, the employee, have investment decisions to make. This freedom of choice is not available with defined benefit plans. In this way, they provide members with some certainty about their retirement income.

Final salary scheme. This is known as the accrual rate. A final salary pension lump sum might be paid as well as your pension, or you might have to give up some income to take a lump sum. In addition, the benefits in most defined benefit plans are protected, within certain limitations, by federal insurance provided through the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation PBGC.

Use Personal Capital's Retirement Planner to calculate how much you would need to save for your retirement. When it comes time to collect your retirement, you usually receive payment in the form of a lump sum or an annuity that provides regular payments for the rest of your life.

Deciding between the two can be a difficult decision, especially since there are different ways an annuity could be structured:. You receive a monthly payment for the rest of your life, and if you die, your beneficiaries receive no further payments. You receive a monthly payment, and if you die before the specified term is over, your beneficiaries receive payments for a preset number of years.

You may also choose to take a lump sum payment and invest it or use it to buy an annuity of your own. People typically understand a defined benefit plan to be a pension: A guaranteed monthly benefit starting at retirement, based on a formula that factors in how long a worker remained with a company and how much they earned. To earn pension benefits, employees usually need to remain with a company for a certain period of time.

Vesting schedules are also a common part of defined contribution plans. About half of k s have some sort of vesting schedule for employer contributions. Cash balance plans are defined benefit plans that grant employees a set account balance at retirement or when they leave the company, instead of a set monthly benefit. For that reason, many people think of them as a hybrid between traditional pensions and k s.

While employers still take on all of the investment risk associated with managing retirement funds, they do not guarantee indefinite benefit payments. Instead, you are guaranteed up to a certain cash balance. Cash balance plans generally calculate benefits based on your total working years with a company, not just your last or highest earning period, meaning some people end up with fewer benefits if their companies switch to a cash balance plan from a pension plan.

Employers typically calculate the cash balance based on two factors: pay credits and interest credits. Each year, participants have an annual account balance that becomes theirs upon vesting and that they receive when they leave the company. Think of defined contribution plans as the new kid on the block, and defined benefit plans as the old pro. A defined benefit plan primarily requires employers to make nearly all contributions while a defined benefit plan expects employees to make most of the contributions—even though many employers may choose to provide some matching contributions.

Defined benefit plans offer greater assurance of some returns, although you could achieve higher earnings by managing your own retirement funds.

Although Attucks was credited as the leader and instigator of the event, debate raged for over as century as to whether he was a hero and a patriot, or a rabble-rousing villain. In the murder trial of the soldiers who fired the fatal shots, John Adams, serving as a lawyer for the crown, reviled the "mad behavior" of Attucks, "whose very looks was enough to terrify any person.

As a slave in Framingham, he had been known for his skill in buying and selling cattle. Brown offered a reward for the man's return, and ended with the following admonition: "And all Matters of Vessels and others, are hereby cautioned against concealing or carrying off said Servant on Penalty of Law.

At other times he worked as a ropemaker in Boston. Attucks' occupation made him particularly vulnerable to the presence of the British. After uncovering his actual name, newspapers published a few details about his life, notably his profession, a sailor; his birth in Framingham, Massachusetts; his current residence of New Providence in the Bahamas; and his ship's destination of North Carolina. William Brown of Framingham placed an advertisement to call for the return of a twenty-seven year old escaped enslaved man named "Crispas," described as a six foot two inch "mulatto.

How and when he gained his freedom is unknown, but it is possible that Attucks used the name Michael Johnson to protect himself from a return to slavery. On March 5, , witnesses placed Attucks at the head of a group of sailors brandishing clubs and marching toward King Street. A crowd formed around a small group of British soldiers, hurling snowballs, ice balls, and insults at the men.

Observers noted Attucks leaned his tall frame on his cordwood club. Two musket balls ripped through Attucks chest, killing him instantly. Because Attucks and fellow victim and sailor James Caldwell had no family or home in Boston, their bodies lay in state at Faneuil Hall. As British control over the colonies tightened, tensions escalated between the colonists and British soldiers. Attucks was one of those directly affected by the worsening situation.

Seamen like Attucks constantly lived with the threat they could be forced into the British navy, while back on land, British soldiers regularly took part-time work away from colonists. On March 2, , a fight erupted between a group of Boston rope makers and three British soldiers. The conflict was ratcheted up three nights later when a British soldier looking for work reportedly entered a Boston pub, only to be greeted by furious sailors, one of whom was Attucks.

The details regarding what followed are a source of debate, but that evening, a group of Bostonians approached a guard in front of the customs house and started taunting him. The situation quickly escalated.

When a contingent of British redcoats came to the defense of their fellow soldier, more angry Bostonians joined the fracas, throwing snowballs and other items at the troops. Attucks was one of those at the front of the fight amid dozens of people, and when the British opened fire he was the first of five men killed. His murder made him the first casualty of the American Revolution. Quickly becoming known as the Boston Massacre, the episode further propelled the colonies toward war with the British.

The flames were fanned even more when the eight soldiers involved in the incident and their captain Thomas Preston, who was tried separately from his men, were acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. Crispus Attucks continues to be honored by the American public.

In , to commemorate the th anniversary of his birth, the US Mint issued a silver coin in honor of Attucks. Many schools, children centers, foundations and museums are named after him representing the struggle and heroism of a black man searching for freedom. Back to Crispus Attucks Homepage. Rest assured this is one of the reasons why birds lay so many eggs and can have multiple broods per year—they are compensating for the inevitable losses they will endure. Want to know who you might find living in your area? This article looks into it. After her incubation attempts the mother bird will either eat the egg as a source of protein, remove it from the nest, bury the eggs or in some cases, like in the case of the bluebird, it will build a new next over the old egg.

Occasionally, all the eggs in a clutch or a few of them fail to hatch. The mother bird does everything she should, sitting on them for the required number of days but still, no chicks emerge from the eggs.

The mother bird may have laid them without mating with a male, or the male bird she met with was infertile. Bluebirds, build a new nest on top of their nonviable eggs. The unhatched eggs of eagles get broken to pieces through constant activity in the nest. Other species of birds simply push the unhatched eggs out of the nest. You might have taken notice of a nest containing eggs somewhere in the woods or on your property.

Some birds like to lay all the eggs in a clutch before they start incubating. Three times the blue bird eggs have disappeared from the nest, one week from hatching. Could the eggs be infertile and mom is taking them out? Had infertile eggs before but were left in nest. If you do not have a baffle cone or stovepipe for example, this can allow climbers like raccoons and squirrels to access the box. In regards to infertile eggs, this is usually determined after the adult has been sitting on the eggs for awhile.

While some birds remove their eggs from their own nest for unknown reasons, one reason we do know of is when an egg is cracked — some birds will dispose of those eggs. Alternatively, some competitor birds will remove eggs if they want to use the box themselves, such as invasive House Sparrows , or the native House Wren wrens are more common if the box is located near shrubby habitat.

If you have more questions about this, please email us at nestwatch cornell. These comment sections are not monitored regularly. Hi I think I am having a un-fertilized problem too. Out of 5 eggs only 1 has hatched. The expected date was the I think the first hatch was the 21st.

Mom and dad are taking good care of the little one. You can learn more in this FAQ. If one baby is older and then bigger, it may take all the food from its siblings or may even kill its siblings. To avoid this, the female waits until she is done laying all the eggs. This is called synchrony.

The crow is an exception to this rule, as the female begins incubating as soon as she lays the first egg.

That is nine episcopal vacancies to be filled by next year, with a new Archbishop of Dublin to be appointed in when Archbishop Diarmuid Martin reaches 75 and a new Bishop of Ferns that year also, when Bishop Denis Brennan is Or will they too be persuaded to hang on into old age?

If not it will bring the number of episcopal vacancies in Ireland to 11 within the next two years, which amounts to well over a third of Catholic bishops on the island. This is not a crisis. As they say, it is an opportunity. The island of Ireland has a population of about 4. It has one archbishop and seven auxiliary bishops.

Ireland has four archbishops, 22 bishops, and two auxiliary bishops, 28 in all, for about a million fewer Catholics than are in the archdiocese of Los Angeles. The time has come to discuss amalgamation. In such crisis it is possible to overcome resistance that may have been unmovable not so long before before. It is said that when the previous papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown , who moved to Albania last year, mooted the idea of amalgamating some dioceses at a meeting of the Irish Catholic bishops in recent years he was met with a stony silence.

He may have gone to pastures new, but the issue remains as pertinent as ever and may have to be addressed by his successor, Archbishop Jude Okolo. The general outline of all Catholic and Church of Ireland dioceses in Ireland today was established at the Synod of Kells in , all of years ago. This was before the Norman invasion and before the establishment of most counties in Ireland today, which is why no diocese in Ireland concurs with county boundaries.

The dioceses are older than the counties in most cases. It is an understatement to say the Synod of Kells was intended to meet the needs of a very different Ireland.

One where, for instance, it was deemed wise that every diocese have access to sea, river or lake as an escape route. The Church of Ireland has long since amalgamated its dioceses into 12, including two archdioceses, and with ongoing discussion of the possible amalgamation of Tuam into another one or two dioceses, which would reduce the number to However, there is resistance to this too, based on tradition and identity. But is it not time for another synod, or some such, in the Irish Catholic Church to look at diocesan structures in the light of modern needs.

There are many reasons why in some instances amalgamation would be a good idea. It would reduce the cost of administration and pressure on finances. It would reduce the number of bishops, which would speed up decision-making and put less pressure on an ever smaller pool of talent from which to select deserving candidates. Above all it would help ensure the protection of children. Dromore, with 23 parishes, is one of the smallest dioceses in Ireland.

That was in December , more than six years before the current furore in Dromore over the handling of clerical child sex abuse allegations there against Newry priest Fr Malachy Finnegan which has led to the resignation of Bishop McAreavey and a special Police Service of Northern Ireland inquiry. So, looking at the map of Irish Catholic dioceses, why not amalgamate Dromore with Armagh archdiocese, bringing its total of parishes to 84? That would still be four parishes fewer than neighbouring Down and Connor diocese mainly Antrim and parts of Down , which has 88 parishes.

Similarly, the two neighbouring dioceses of Kilmore 36 parishes and Clogher 37 could be combined, giving a total of 73 parishes. While the Catholic population in the U. The situation means that many dioceses are in the position of supporting a diocesan infrastructure — chancery, tribunal, central school administration, social services apostolate — with fewer dollars, fewer priests, and fewer practicing Catholics.

That administrative challenge may well be among the disincentives for episcopal candidates, especially among those dioceses which are in bankruptcy. Share The Pillar. In short, the Congregation for Bishops may soon decide that the best way to get good episcopal leadership is to have fewer diocesan bishops — and, to make that happen, fewer dioceses.

Pope Francis has emphasized in his papacy the importance of focusing on evangelization, the importance of the mental and spiritual health of bishops, and the importance of detachment from institutional sacred cows. To address those things, it would not come as a surprise if the next prefect of the Congregation for Bishops begins consulting broadly about the prospect of systematic diocesan mergers in the U.

The alternative might be more interminable waits for priests willing to say yes to the martyrdom of being a bishop. The Pillar Subscribe Sign in. About Archive Help Sign in. Share this post.

Crumple zones are areas of a vehicle that are designed to crush in a controlled way in a collision. They increase the time taken to change the momentum of the driver and passengers in a crash, which reduces the force involved. Car safety features When there is a car crash, the car, its contents and the passengers decelerate rapidly. These typically include: seat belts air bags crumple zones These features reduce injuries to the people in the car by absorbing energy from the impact.

Seat belts Seat belts stop you tumbling around inside the car if there is a collision. Safety specialists must find the right balance between too much and too little resistance. Many simple crumple zone designs involve frames that bend or collapse into themselves upon impact. Advanced designs may use different metals and other materials that, when used together, absorb more kinetic energy. While crumple zones can help lessen injuries and save lives, there are other safety features to consider when purchasing a new car.

Crumple zones add time to the crash by absorbing energy. The front of the vehicle effectively acts as a cushion that slows the time it takes for the vehicle to come to a complete stop, applying less force on passengers, which could help save their lives.

But in actuality, such construction proved deadly to passengers, because the force from impact went straight inside the vehicle and onto the passenger. These features reduce injuries to the people in the car by absorbing energy from the impact.

These features absorb energy when they change shape. This reduces injuries to the people in the car. They increase the time taken for the change in momentum on the occupants' bodies, and so reduce the forces involved and any subsequent injuries.

Jackson, Douglas S. Lewis, D. Rick Lee, Peter J. To determine whether the amino acid pattern of human milk is unique, we compared the amino acid pattern of human milk with the amino acid patterns of the milks of great apes chimpanzee and gorilla , lower primates baboon and rhesus monkey and nonprimates cow, goat, sheep, llama, pig, horse, elephant, cat and rat.

Amino acid pattern was defined as the relative proportion of each amino acid protein-bound plus free in mg to the total amino acids in g. Total amino acid concentration was lower in primate milk than in nonprimate milk.

The amino acid pattern of human milk was more similar to those of great apes than to those of lower primates. For example, cystine was higher and methionine was lower in primate milks than in nonprimate milks, and in great ape and human milks than in lower primate milks.

Because the milk amino acid patterns of the human and elephant, both slow-growing species, were dissimilar, the amino acid pattern of human milk seems unrelated to growth rate. Keep me logged in on this device. Forgot your username or password? Battle rez? He was probably more pissed off with the battle res than preemptively soulstoning him. Sometimes I do soulstone one of them before, but only in very specific situations as I prefer to save the battle res.

In a raid environment is a whole different thing. Proper use of Soulstone? Not any more, unfortunately. I ran into a situation where I soul-stoned a tank, who was unable to use the soulstone because he'd already received a battle-res in that battle. For whatever reason, the game has been changed so that you can be ressed one way or the other, not both. Yes, which is why asakawa says to soulstone the druid so it can res someone else. Post by DraconisAerius I would stress, ensure the person you use your SS on knows about it and knows how to use the res properly.

I have, in level 80 raids, seen people fail to make use of the SS on them and cause the group to fail the encounter pugs are so fail. They're thinking about making it like that, but iirc it's still undecided.

Not sure if anyone said this already, but there is a restriction on in-combat rezzes currently: man: only 1 person can be rezzed either through a SS or Rebirth maybe even a Shaman's Reincarnation, not sure about that one though If you have the ability to resurrect other players, check to see whether they're Soulstoned before you do so.

The "soulstoned" buff will appear if you select their corpse assuming they haven't yet released. The only reason they shouldn't self-resurrect if there's an ally alive and going around resurrecting people is if by using the soulstone they might aggro nearby mobs, as by having an ally cast a resurrect spell on them they will move to that ally's hopefully safe location.

But if they've died in a good location, you only have your mana to lose by casting a rez on them. If you are a shaman that has been soulstoned, and die, take care not to use Reincarnation as you will start its long cooldown, use up an [ Ankh ] , and waste the soulstone. Understand the responsibilities you are giving an ally if you soulstone them. Choose a party member based not only on their class abilities to recover your group from a wipe, but also on their understanding of the guidelines above.

If you soulstone someone who tends to die bad, or who rezzes during combat, consider someone else next time.

Remember that the rest of your group are also depending on you to soulstone the right person. In general, shamans are considered a lesser choice for soulstone after priests and paladins because of their Reincarnation ability. However, using a soulstone will allow the shaman to save the Reincarnation cooldown for another wipe, and if someone else is soulstoned, the shaman generally shouldn't be using Reincarnation anyway. So, the argument that "Reincarnation is doing nothing while not being used, and using it sooner and having the soulstone on someone else just sees to the ability's usefulness and the cooldown coming back faster" is moot.

The shaman's resurrection ability has no cooldown, just like a priest's or paladin's, and a shaman is nearly as viable a choice for the soulstone as anyone. The one reason that the shaman would be considered a slightly lesser choice for it would be if the group wishes to have more than one person capable of self-resurrection in case one of them dies in a bad place. Also remember that, much like paladins, some shamans will be built to be in melee combat, and the chance of a melee character dying in a good place to use a Soulstone is less probable than a ranged character doing the same.

Enhancement shamans will generally be tied with Retribution paladins for the lowest priority rezzers to receive the soulstone buff. Prior to Wotlk , druids were considered the last of the healing classes to soulstone.

This was due to the fact that the only resurrection spell a druid had was Rebirth. While Rebirth is, and remains, the only resurrection spell that can be used in combat, it costs the druid a reagent unless glyphed , and has a long cooldown. With the introduction of Revive , a normal resurrection spell without cooldowns or regeants, this raises the potential for druids to be soulstoned.

Druids remain the only class that can resurrect in or out of combat, as well as tougher armor either by wearing leather, or turning into a form. If one is considering to soulstone between a priest and a druid, the main healer should get a soulstone. Druids could arguably be a wiser class to receive a soulstone, but may not be ideal if a priest or other class is dying frequently.
