Sylvia Kristel , as Lady Chatterley "Connie" to her husband is an appealing young woman with clear eyes and a sweet ability to underplay a sex scene. The men in her life are Shane Briant , as her husband, and Nicholas Clay , as her lover.

Briant has the most hapless task. He has to sit through most of the movie In a wheelchair, calling "Connie! Nicholas Clay is a classically trained British actor with an impressive list of credits, but what, I ask you, can he really do with a symbolic log-splitting scene? Clay belongs to that generation of gifted British actors, in their 30s which also includes Jeremy Irons and John Hurt , and no doubt he was promised that this film of " Lady Chatterley " would be faithful to Lawrence's original vision.

Jeremy Irons was smarter. He was offered a film version of " The French Lieutenant's Woman " that played havoc with the John Fowles novel and he took it anyway.

Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from until his death in In , he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Sylvia Kristel as Lady Chatterley.

Lady Chatterley: We want to make the world dance to our tune, that's all. But the world's got a tune of its own, much older than ours. Sam R Super Reviewer. Sep 30, Beautiful, believable and nothing short of a wonderful sexy surprise made in France and this runs for almost 3 hours. All the support acting is measured and helps provide a solid counterbalance for the central couple who gradually learn to let go their inhibitions and slide blissfully from lust to love.

It is all very gradually done from Chatterley's first glimpse of the gamekeeper washing himself outside his hut and her consequent, and at the time seemingly over the top, need to sit to gather her senses, literally; to the powerful scene where she asks him to turn and display his erect penis and the wondrous scenes of the naked couple cavorting ecstatically in the pouring rain.

All in all a fine mix of the wonders of nature, the manliness of the hand made, the power of sex and the need for love. Marina Hands is gorgeous as the title role and radiates happiness in love. For me she is really English. Dean M Super Reviewer. Jun 10, Veronique K Super Reviewer. May 01, Wonderful movie. I'd never read Lawrence's novel but I felt delighted after watching this.

How wrong I was, this is a very fine film and doesn't drag for a moment. It is beautiful, believable and nothing short of a wonderful sexy surprise. All in all a fine mix of the wonders of nature, the manliness of the hand made, the power of sex and the need for love. The more overt political elements that Lawrence would probably have wanted put more to the fore are probably better dealt with here, kept more in the background. Brave film making, especially at a time when being so positive about 'sexual healing' seems so out of vogue.

Details Edit. Release date November 1, France. Belgium France. Official site Spain. Box office Edit. Technical specs Edit. Runtime 2 hours 48 minutes. But I do think — in spite of the deviation and modernisation — that this is loyal to Lawrence, in its themes of class, the ridiculous social order of things, nature and physical love, and in its language and spirit. Nature plays its part, appropriately; there are woods, damp leaves, pheasant chicks to be cupped and stroked, and I think we all know where that leads … Well, more deep-down explosions, naturally; but the nice sort this time, not the mining disasters.

Yeah, eff off Parky, sleazeball. Reuse this content.
