It is a private gated community developed to balance a residential community with the business development of the Island. Kiawah Island was named for the Kiawah Indians, who inhabited the island before the arrival of the English in South Carolina.

In , John Stanyarne, a wealthy planter who lived on Johns Island, bought the half of Kiawah Island that had been owned by Captain Raynor and, in , bought the remaining half that had been owned by Captain Davis. Stanyarne and subsequent owners raised cattle and produced crops on Kiawah through the use of slave labor until the practice was abolished.

He did, and three weeks later, he arrived in Charles Town a very rich man, finished with pirating. In order to enter civil society, and dispel the 'myth' of his pirate past, he gave generously to charities and causes, and in the Lords Proprietors granted Raynor his hiding place, Kiawah Island. Rumors of pirate gold buried on the island exist today. Raynor sold half of his land to a Captain William Davis, and after his death, the original half was passed down to his daughter, Mary Raynor Moore.

By , a wealthy planter named John Stanyarne had purchased both halves of the island, and began a cattle ranching and indigo plantation. At the time of his death in , his will divided the island between his two granddaughters. Mary Gibbs received the western half, and Elizabeth Vanderhorst the east. The Vanderhorst Plantation, today the site of an exclusive gated luxury community and famous golf courses, was destroyed by the British in during the American Revolution.

With its miles of oceanfront, maritime forests, and salt marsh, few places are as rich in natural beauty. Initial zoning allowed for 12, residential units, but a previous ownership group had cut that by more than half to preserve the natural habitat and make the homes even more valuable for the current 4, property owners. Another constant has been the quality of the amenities. The first course exclusively for members, the Tom Fazio-designed River, opened in ; it was recently treated to a major bunker renovation.

Each course has a clubhouse, and each clubhouse has a locker room elegant enough to live in. Members also have exclusive use of a large sports pavilion and spa. Kiawah gets a boost from the resort, which enjoys a world-class reputation. One of those attracted by the big events was John McCallum, 63, a banker from New Jersey, who has owned three different homes on the island since Twenty years later, in , Captain Raynor sold his half of Kiawah to a fellow captain by the name of William Davis.

Davis went on to eventually gift the 2,acre share of the property to his daughter, Mary Raynor Moore. Raynor was a pirate known for raiding faraway places, including the Red Sea and Madagascar. He eventually made his way to the Carolinas, where he decided to change his pirating ways and settle on the quiet Island of Kiawah.

Lords Proprietors were high-ranking men appointed by English rule to create settlements in the New World. In , these powerful men came to Kiawah and traded simple goods such as hatchets, cloth materials, and beads with the natives to purchase the Island. When the English arrived in , the Cassique was able to convince the colonists to change their plans of settling south of Kiawah, near present-day Beaufort.

At the time, the Spanish claimed this area and eventually destroyed a Scottish colony where the English had also planned to settle. Instead, the colonists settled north of Kiawah at Charlestowne Landing, and were influential in creating the city of Charleston. These natives inhabited the Island for decades in the early s before the English arrived in Today, we pay homage to these influential ancestors with the naming of the Cassique golf course and Cassique enclaves.
