Can you torque helicoil
Nor doubting you for a second, you seem to always speak sense, just curious. Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is! I need a geo set up! Logic would say it's the torque normal applied to steel in aluminium for the outside thread id of the helicoil you are using.
The bolt inside would be steel in steel so would be higher than that of the outside which is steel in aluminium. So to clarify it's the outside thread of the helicoil which is the limiting factor. So use that. I have to admit I thought one of the selling points of the helicoil insert was that the fixing could still support the original torque value? I'd hazard a guess that because the helicoil has a larger surface area in contact with the parent material effectively going up a bolt size , it would actually support a higher torque?
These aspects of bolt manufacturing are discussed elsewhere in this document. The foregoing discussion concentrated on the design of bolts. The same considerations apply in the design of studs. Joined: Aug 26, Posts: 4, Profile Page. HemiRambler , Apr 13, Joined: Mar 13, Posts: 4, Profile Page.
I think somebody is about to Torgue C9! All of these are valid points. The application of a given fastener can be just as important as the material it is used in and what it is made of. Back to the original question A helicoil in aluminum is not the weak link. Torque to spec. A helicoil in a connecting rod? Thanks guys, about what I originally thought, plus with a little more information to boot. Who once said "m'I KO won! C9 , May 13, Joined: Dec 15, Posts: 1, Profile Page.
Kenneth S , May 13, Quick links. How much torque can a helicoil take? Struts, spring, anti-rollbars, braces and the like. Post by coffeeman » Tue Mar 13, am I messed up some of the threads on one of the bolt holes while putting my ALK in. I am going to try to fix them with at tap but if that doesn't work then I will probably have to helicoil it. I ordered ARP bolts described above because they are 5mm longer and want to use the new unused threads behind the damaged ones.
It should be clear that the undamged holes will have nearly double contact area then and they should easy take the wanted torque.
But the two holes which aren't fine only have 5 or 6 threads i can use. Parallel i ordered yesterday new nissan bolts. Because they don't have a complete set in germany in the moment i ordered only one. Because i ordered ARP today i didn't look in the nissan basket. Now for a moment i took them out and looked at them.
Nothing specia See the picture So i did nothing really wrong with lubing or torquing. At least for repeatable torquings, 5 threads are not enough that's the whole problem. What do the guys who swap auto to manual box?
Maybe they can tell the difference between the bolts Glad you got it sorted; the fix is near now . JCD Thanx for this info. On my current Nissan invoice i could find the D part number you mentioned. Nissan price is 6 Euro each. A set of eight cost 48 Euro. So i order two sets. I wil report if they are fine when arrived.
